Abstract |
Background/Aims To understand the pathogenesis of H. pylori infection, an ideal animal model to be cost effective, easy to work with and reproduce the various aspects of H. pylori disease is required. The aim of this study was to establish BALB/c mouse infected with frozen H. pylori. Methods: BALB/c mice were inoculated intragastrically with 2×109 CFU of SS1 and HP99, the mouse adapted H. pylori. Loss of glandular architecture, erosions and infiltration of inflammatory cells with normal gastric mucosa were investigated. In the 4, 6 and 8 weeks after bacterial inoculation, H. pylori infected mice were sacrificed. Evidence for H. pylori infection was assessed by CLO test, Hematoxylin & Eosin stain and by UreC PCR of gastric mucosa. Results: The H. pylori colonization and positive CLO tests were observed in all inoculated mice. The UreC PCR showed that the inoculated mouse isolate gave an identical band pattern to the original frozen H. pylori strains. No definite infiltration of inflammatory cell and gastric mucosal atrophy were shown. Conclusions: The additional study of BALB/c mouse model infected with fresh and frozen H. pylori strains (SS1, HP99) more than 8 weeks is needed.
