Abstract |
Experimental evidences of association between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric carcinoma are increasing. Recent evidences suggest that expression of various molecules enrolled in cell cycle machinery in gastric epithelial cells are affected by H. pylori infection resulting in change of cell proliferation and cell death. Loss of growth control is a characteristic of malignant cells. Unconstrained proliferation can be largely explained by the gain or loss of function of protein that constitute the cell cycle machinery itself. Almost all human cancers are found to have mutations in one or another of the genes involved in controlling cell cycle. The derangement of cell cycle in H. pylori infected gastric epithelial cell may be a molecular mechanism of Helicobacter-induced gastric carcinogenesis. In this review, molecular mechanism of cell cycle control will be discussed. (Korean J Helicobacter Res Prac 2001;1:26-30) |
