Abstract
The meeting of the Asia-Pacific consensus of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was held and the report published at the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2008. In Asia-Pacific area, the prevalence of erosive esophagitis including Barrett's esophagus were less common than in Western country. But non-erosive reflux disease was more common. Recently, rapid economic development in Korea has increased in gross national income per person. The increase in westernization and urbanization were advanced fastly, and there were abundant social changes such as changes in diet, environmental hygiene, aging, and obesity. Reflux esophagitis increased from rapidly in Korea. In Asia-Pacific consensus meeting, there have been developments in definition of GERD and Barrett's esophagus and extra-esophageal symptoms such as chronic cough and hoarseness are recognized. GERD is defined as a disorder in which gastric contents reflux recurrently into the esophagus, causing troublesome symptoms or complication. Barrett's esophagus is the presence of columnar lined epithelium suspected at endoscopy and proved by histology which requires the presence of intestinal metaplasia. While, they shall not adopt the term endoscopically suspected esophageal metaplasia which refers to endoscopic findings consistent with Barrett's esophagus that await histological confirmation. These assessments revealed significant changes compared with previous guidelines in 2004. There was a need for a comprehensive, review of GERD management in the Asia-Pacific context.
