Abstract
Background/Aims: It has been suggested that the Th1 immune system is involved in the inflammatory reaction Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), while the Th2 immune system in the eradication of H. pylori. This research aims to find out the effects of interleukin-4 (IL-4) production levels and genetic polymorphism of IL-4 and IL-4Rα in the eradication of H. pylori. Methods: 103 dyspeptic patients were divided into two groups according to H. pylori infection. IL-4 productions, stimulated H. pylori and polymorphism of interleulcin-4 (IL-4), IL-4Rα gene were measured in the whole blood specimen. The former measurement was repeated after the eradication in H. pylori positive group. Results: There was no difference in the IL-4 production and IL-4 polymorphism according to H. pylori status. But a significant increased IL-4 production was detected in the eradicated group compared to non-eradicated group before eradication. After eradication, there was no difference of IL-4 production in the both groups although there was a trend toward increased levels in eradicated group. Conclusions: Blood IL-4 production, a major cytokine of the Th2 immune system, was increased in the H. pylori eradicated group before the eradication. This suggests that increased blood IL-4 production before eradication may contribute to the successful eradication of H. pylori.
